Approximately 2000 people in Singapore suffer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myheart.org.sg\/my-heart\/heart-conditions\/heart-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart attack<\/a>\u00a0each year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/AsiaMDWhatsAppEN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Follow us on WhatsApp for the latest updates: https:\/\/bit.ly\/AsiaMDWhatsAppEN\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Furthermore, due to the earlier adoption of unhealthy lifestyle habits, heart disease is occurring at a younger age. Nowadays, it is not unusual to see patients as young as 40 develop heart disease with <a href=\"https:\/\/asiamd.com\/cardiothoracic-surgery\/when-do-swollen-ankles-and-feet-signify-a-heart-valve-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, we are beginning to see more women with heart disease nowadays. This is largely due to the increased prevalence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhcs.com.sg\/news\/murmurs\/smoking-stories-a-cardiologist-has-to-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smoking<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singhealth.com.sg\/patient-care\/patient-education\/diabetes-mellitus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes<\/a> among women. In the US, the fatality rate for women with heart disease is 6 times that of women with breast cancer. Hence, it is very useful for one to debunk the common myths surrounding heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>As with all maladies in life, prevention is always better than cure. While <a href=\"https:\/\/asiamd.com\/cardiothoracic-surgery\/what-treatments-for-heart-failure-are-least-invasive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treatments<\/a>\u00a0are advancing every year, cardiovascular screening may help high-risk individuals benefit from aggressive preventive strategies. Today, we have at our disposal, highly sensitive diagnostic tools such as carotid ultrasound, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/the-heart-test-you-may-need-but-likely-havent-heard-of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coronary calcium scanning<\/a>\u00a0and CT coronary angiogram which allow us to identify early cholesterol deposits in the arteries of the brain and heart.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals who may benefit from cardiovascular screening include:<\/p>\n<p>1. Men (aged 40 &amp; above) and women (aged 50 &amp; above) with at least one of the following risk factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singhealth.com.sg\/patient-care\/conditions-treatments\/high-blood-pressure-hypertension-management\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High blood pressure<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singhealth.com.sg\/patient-care\/conditions-treatments\/cholesterol-management\/other-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High cholesterol<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<li>Family history of heart disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.
