Feelings of dizziness may be triggered or worsened by standing or sitting up, or moving your head. Sometimes, dizziness can also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, headaches, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/tinnitus\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20350162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">tinnitus <\/span><\/a>(a ringing or humming in your ear).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/t.me\/AsiaMDsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Follow us on Telegram for the latest updates: https:\/\/t.me\/AsiaMDsg<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Dizziness has many causes, including problems in your inner ear which affect your body\u2019s balance. It can also be caused by poor blood circulation, a drop in blood pressure, or neurological conditions like a stroke or migraine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/brain\/vertigo-symptoms-causes-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vertigo<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is a sensation where you feel like you are spinning, even when there is no movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Spells of dizziness and vertigo can affect your quality of life, but are usually not life-threatening. You should see your GP if you have been experiencing dizziness or vertigo for two weeks, or if it greatly interferes with daily life. It can be treated with medication like antihistamines or injections. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">If these are not effective, your GP can refer you to an Ear, Nose &amp; Throat (ENT) specialist for most cases. You may also see a neurologist if migraines, strokes or tumours are suspected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\">These are the most common types of vertigo you should know about.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"s5\">1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/brain\/types-of-vertigo\"><span class=\"s6\">Positional vertigo<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><b>Positional or Peripheral Vertigo<\/b> is triggered by positional change. It is brought on when you lie down, not worsened when you lie down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthhub.sg\/a-z\/diseases-and-conditions\/757\/Benign-Paroxysmal-Positional-Vertigo#:~:text=Benign%2520Paroxysmal%2520Positional%2520Vertigo%2520(BPPV)%2520is%2520characterised%2520by%2520the%2520sudden,in%2520bed%2520and%2520looking%2520upwards).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) <\/b><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>i<\/b>s the most common type of positional vertigo. This is when the small calcium stones inside the inner ear become loose, affecting your balance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">BPPV can be treated with physiotherapy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/home-epley-maneuver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">Epley\u2019s manoeuvre<\/span><\/a> can help reposition the stones in your inner ear. Exercises can also help your brain adapt to movements which cause dizziness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"s7\">2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/labyrinthitis-and-vestibular-neuritis\"><span class=\"s8\">Vertigo caused by infection<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthxchange.sg\/head-neck\/ear-nose-throat\/common-cold-vertigo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Labyrinthitis<\/b><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is an infection of the labyrinth channels in the inner ear. It can occur after a flu or cold. It causes vertigo and residual dizziness that lasts a few days or months, and affects your hearing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Labyrinthitis can be treated with anti-nausea medication or oral steroids.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Vestibular neuritis <\/b>is the viral infection of the vestibular nerve in the inner ear. It also causes vertigo, but not hearing loss. It can be treated with medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"s9\">3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/menieres-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20374910\"><span class=\"s1\">Meniere\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">This type of vertigo is caused by a dysfunctional fluid balance in the inner ear. It is accompanied by hearing loss and tinnitus, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. Symptoms usually last about two to three hours. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s10\">Meniere\u2019s disease is uncommon in Asia, where only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgh.com.sg\/healthlibrary\/Documents\/ENT\/Meniere's%2520Disease_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">an estimated 40 in 1,000,000 people (0.0004%) have the disease<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">There is no cure for Meniere\u2019s disease, but medication can help control the symptoms. A diet low in salt, sugar and caffeine is also recommended for patients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">See your GP first if you think you have Meniere\u2019s disease, as it can cause permanent hearing loss if untreated.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">So, when should you see an ENT specialist for dizziness?
