Europe and North America top the calorie race with a whopping <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3,540 calories per day. In addition, the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number of calories per person consumed globally, increased by a full nine per cent on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average last year, to 2,960 per day, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we really need that many calories on a daily basis? In Japan, a concept known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/2017\/12\/hara-hachi-bu-enjoy-food-and-lose-weight-with-this-simple-phrase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hara Hachi Bu<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guides people to eat until they are about 80% full. This practice has not only been a cornerstone of healthy living in one of the world\u2019s Blue Zones in Okinawa, Japan, but has also caught the attention of ordinary people and medical researchers worldwide. In a study, calorie restriction in humans appeared to cause changes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/calorie-restriction-humans-builds-strong-muscle-stimulates-healthy-aging-genes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slowed or stopped inflammation<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for some people as well as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/calories-and-aging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased metabolism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data from epidemiological studies suggest that caloric restrictions have beneficial effects on human longevity. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17986602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study on the inhabitants of Okinawa (Japan)<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who were known to consume fewer calories than residents of the main Japanese islands. In this older cohort of Okinawans (aged 65+) mortality from<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5403510\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronary heart disease and cancer was markedly<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than in the average mainland Japanese and US population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Difficult to Determine if Calorie Restrictions on Humans Can Benefit Lifespan<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to note that while calorie restrictions have health benefits, it is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2020\/can-calorie-restriction-extend-your-lifespan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficult to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determine whether calorie restrictions can actually extend our lifespan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some of the reasons include: there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uibk.ac.at\/en\/newsroom\/2024\/biomarkers-of-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no guidelines for standardising the development and validation of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biomarkers of aging<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it is also impractical to conduct randomised, diet-controlled, long-term survival studies in normal-weight humans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, a clinical study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3439843\/#R27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CALERIE trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reports that participants achieved significant health benefits such as lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, as well as improved insulin sensitivity index. However, as the clinical trial lasted only 2 years, the effects on lifespan could not be directly measured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Longevity Critics: More Proof is Needed<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrict calories to live longer, some studies say, but critics say more proof is needed as there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3439843\/#R27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversy over bioclocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> natural mechanisms that control the aging process in living organisms as well as differences in anti-aging research findings at the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/10\/health\/restricting-calories-longevity-wellness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critics<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calorie restriction researcher Pankaj Kapahi, a professor at the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, California<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voiced that calorie restriction is just one of the many interventions to slow ageing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to learn more about ageing and we are, but calorie restriction is just one<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intervention,\u201d he said. \u201cYou likely need to do that in combination with exercise, with good<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep, with a positive attitude and good mental health.
